The Tacking Process involves teamwork. See below for the steps to follow: 1️⃣ One person sits beside each jib winch. 2️⃣ The helmsman calls Ready about! and, upon hearing Ready from the winch crew, shouts Lee Ho!
Tacking is for when you are moving upwind. Jibing is for anything from a beam docHub to DDW (Direct down Wind) and is the most fun! It might seem counter-intuitive, but the faster youre going when you initiate the gybe, the less violent it will be.
Generally, a boat is on a starboard tack if the wind is coming over the starboard (right) side of boat with sails on port (left) side. Similarly, a boat is on a port tack if the wind is coming over the port (left) side of boat.

Unlike the tack, the sail will cross quickly to the new side without any luffing, and in a strong wind this sudden change of wind pressure from one side of the boat to the other can cause a capsize if precautions are not taken. Also, unlike the tack, a large change of course is not necessary for a jibe to occur.
If the wind is shifting regularly around a mean direction, tack if the shift makes you sail below your mean heading. That way you will sail the shortest distance upwind. Upwind, you are tacking on the headers. Downwind, gybe on the lifts.
The boat on a starboard tack has the right of waythe wind coming over the starboard rail. When two vessels are on the same tack (the wind is coming from the same side), the leeward boat (downwind) has the right of way over the windward boat (that presumably has clean air for better sailing conditions).
