To clean your tack properly, youll need a sponge, a cloth, warm water, glycerin soap (a bar is best), and a high-quality leather balsam product. Start by using a sponge dampened in clean, warm water to wipe away any sweat and muck from the leather.
How often should I clean tack? Ideally, you should clean leather tack every time you ride, says Haught. Its really simple to wipe it down after you ride, and if you get in this habit your tack will look nice and last a lot longer.

The basics of keeping your tack clean is simply using a soft brush or soft towel to remove dust from the surface as well as in between the creases under the flaps. Making sure the saddle is cleared of dust on the surface underneath the flaps.
Another way to sanitize brushes is to add moderate amount of Listerine mouthwash to the wash water it smells nice and kills bacteria. Soak the brushes for several minutes, agitating them to loosen dirt. Rinse and repeat the process until the water is no longer discolored and you dont see any soap suds.
To properly deep clean and oil a piece of tack youll need saddle soap, Neatsfoot oil or a substitute and a couple of pieces of sheepskin or clean cloth. I use Neatsfoot oil but other oils such as olive will work.

* Use boot polish on your bridle to get really sparkling shine! * Always use separate cloths for washing off, soaping and polishing your tack. * Bits and metalwork can get really grimy, especially after a show, so remove them from the bridle and soak them in a bucket of hot, soapy water before polishing them up.
The best way to clean most horse tack is by using saddle soap and water. Mix the saddle soap with warm water and scrub the leather with a soft cloth or sponge until its clean. Once youre finished, rinse off your equipment in cold water and let it dry before storing.
The traditional method of leather care is to wipe dust and sweat from your tack immediately after use with a sponge or cloth that is barely moistened with cool water. Then rub a thin layer of glycerin soap on the leather to seal the pores and keep it soft but not sticky.
