One of the most frequently asked questions we get at Sterling Essentials is, How do you kill mold and mildew in your tack? You went to the tack sale, you got the great find, the great bargain, but its all moldy and what are you going to do about it? Were going to share with you our best tips on how to tackle mold - on how you can kill it off naturally, how you can prevent it naturally. No harsh cleaners, no bleach, nothing toxic - this you can do and youre going to have leather as good as new. You can really fight this off yourself and have happier leather because of it. The most important thing you can do is to pick the right cleaner for the job. When youre shopping you want to look for a cleaner that is specially formulated to match the pH of leather. That means it is slightly acidic. And you also want a cleaner that doesnt have any conditioners in it - no glycerin or anything like that. Mold loves to feed off of conditioners so you are defeating the purpose if youre cleaning

Putting a dehumidifier in your tack room during the summer months can help to reduce the amount of moisture in the room, inhibiting mildew growth. Be sure to empty the dehumidifier regularly.
No need to panic, but your tack does need prompt attention. As soon as you untack, wipe down the saddle thoroughly with a dry towel to remove excess moisture. Then use leather cleaner to remove any dirt, mud or other stains. Put the saddle on a stand and let it air dry in a place with good ventilation.
After getting caught in the rain, hang your tack to dry prior to treating it (never use heat to dry it as this will dry out the leather more). Start by taking the brittle tack completely apart and treating it with a leather cleaning solution. Then, use a leather conditioning oil to restore moisture to the leather.
The traditional method of leather care is to wipe dust and sweat from your tack immediately after use with a sponge or cloth that is barely moistened with cool water. Then rub a thin layer of glycerin soap on the leather to seal the pores and keep it soft but not sticky.
Preventing Moldy Tack Wipe your tack with a damp cloth (yes, just water) after every use to remove sweat and dirt. When needed, use a leather cleaner, but avoid glycerin soap in moist environments as it acts as a humectant, attracting the environmental moisture and helping to feed mold spores.
Mix one part white vinegar with two parts water in a clean bucket, or add a squirt of antibacterial dish soap to a bucket of water. Using a fresh rag and a toothbrush to help you get into crevices and fine stitching, carefully clean the leather. Allow your tack to dry in a warm, ventilated room or in the shade.
Store out of direct sunlight in a dry place or store in a suitable storage bag or box to protect from damp and bugs. Make sure you store winter and summer equipment in clearly marked airtight bins and rotate them as necessary.
Clean your tack regularly, and use clean rags, clean sponges, and clean water. Dry it off with a soft towel after.
