A uniform application of a high quality tack coat at the appropriate residual asphalt rate to a clean dry surface is key to successfully bond pavement layers together for peak long-term performance.
Too much tack coat can create a lubricated slippage plane between layers, or can cause the tack coat material to be drawn into an overlay, negatively affecting mix properties and even creating a potential for bleeding in thin overlays (Flexible Pavements of Ohio, 2001).
Therefore, the estimated quantity of tack coat is determined as follows: Quantity of Tack Coat = (quantity of emulsion in gallons) (gallons of emulsion per ton) = 61,952 gallons 240 gal./ton = 258.1 tons Quantity of Tack Coat = 259 tons.
1 The quantity of tack used can be measured from the tack truck distributor by reading the attached flow meter. The meter should be read at the beginning and the end of the tack run. The difference from the beginning and the end is the total number of gallons used to spray tack on the calculated area of roadway.
Tack Coat is a product that promotes adhesion between cleaned EPDM or Modified Bitumen roofing and Conklins Rapid Roof III acrylic elastomeric roof coating. The coverage rate for Conklin Tack Coat for an EPDM System is approximately 250-300 square feet per gallon.
Spray nozzles limit minimum application rates to approximately 0.05 gallons per square yard. Spray application rates closer to 0.10 gallons per square yard are recommended as they promote more even coverage. Dilution may be necessary to achieve even coverage.
It is recommended that all application specifications be in terms of residual asphalt. While some researchers have indicated that tack coats may not always be needed to get good bonding, the preponderance of literature supports always using tack coats between lifts of asphalt.
