Ink Adhesion may be evaluated using -inch wide Scotch brand 600 adhesive tape, placing the tape firmly over the area to be tested and removing it quickly at a 180 degree angle. Ink should remain on the substrate.
In other words, tack value reflects ink cohesive energy. When the separation velocity becomes very high, it will make ink prevent ink film from splitting on its maximal cohesive energy however the velocity increases.
Tack is a measure of the forces required to split a single film into two. In case of ink, such film splitting is influenced by rheological and adhesive ink properties and the internal cohesion of the ink. Tack depends heavily on the ink formulation.
If there is picking and build-up problem during printing, tack reducer gel can be used to reduce tack value. Ink tack reducer is normally used to adjust the tack value without affecting the rheology. If there is picking and build-up problem during printing, tack reducer gel can be used to reduce tack value.
In multi-color printing, the first ink printed must have greater tack than the ink that will be printed on top of it, or the latter will not trap on the first ink. The tack of an ink can be measured with an Inkometer or a Tackoscope.
Printing Tack (Set Rate): This test measures the ability of a paper to absorb the thin oils from ink and the set rate of ink on our standard paper or any other paper. As the oils leave the ink film, the ink sets and after time, eventually dries. If the ink contains heavy oxidation-type oils, it sets slowly.
