[Music] hello and welcome to history pod on the 6th of July 1892 dozens were killed or injured when Pinkerton agents working on behalf of the Carnegie steel company fought striking steel workers in Homestead Pennsylvania by the 1890s the Carnegie steel company was one of the worlds largest and most profitable manufacturing firms its owner Andrew Carnegie had agreed to grant a favorable three-year contract after the trade union amalgamated Association of iron and steel workers organized a strike in 1889 but was determined to break the Union in his factory before the contract expired on the 30th of June 1892 carnegie left his business partner Henry Clay Frick in charge of the negotiations having initially offered a docHub wage cut that was immediately rejected Frick began locking the workers out of the factory on the evening of the 28th of June two days before the contract expired as he began to surround the factory with an enormous barbed wire fence the workers voted overwhelming
