Chadwick often used either the first or last letter of key words in his scoring scheme. He used K to represent struck out because it is the last letter in struck. Like many of Chadwicks innovations, this symbol is still used today.
In the scorebook, a strikeout is denoted by the letter K. A third-strike call on which the batter doesnt swing is denoted with a backward K.
Definition. A K is a strikeout.
You strike out looking when you do not swing at a pitch that an umpire calls as your third strike. You strike out swinging when you get your third strike by swinging at a pitch and missing.
Another reason the letter K is used is that it is made with 3 strokes of the pencil, symbolizing the 3 strikes for the strikeout. Chadwick also used a backward K when a batter strikes out looking or called out on the third strike because it isnt as common as striking out swinging.
