hi this is sandra henry stocker author of the unix as a second language blog on network world in this linux tip were going to compare two checksum commands the checksum command that provides an easy way to compare a copy of a file to the original and the sha 256 sum command that pretty much does the same thing but computes a 256 bit checksum that is cryptographically secure so the checksum command does a crc or thats a cyclical redundancy check and if you want to compare files you could do something like this you can go check some some file and its going to give you the checksum here and lets do the same thing with another file ill call this one my file and you can see we get the same number so that shows us that the file is the same its more than just having the same number of characters but having exactly the same content now if you add or change a single character in one of these files so ill go echo x and add it to my file and then compute the c
