Today, we're discussing value in color. The color wheel has all the colors, but black and white don't have a spot. You can add them to any color, making it darker (shade) with black or lighter (tint) with white. Mixing black and red makes maroon, while white and red create pink. Mixing black and white gives gray, which, when added to a color, creates tones. Experiment with paints to create different shades, tints, and tones.

Value is the measurement of the amount of black or white a pure hue has mixed. By adding black to the color, the value is made darker, resulting in what is referred to as a shade. When white is added to a color, the result is a lighter value. Lighter values are referred to as tints.
Tint: A pure pigment with just white added. Shade: a pure pigment with just black added.
For example: If you took a black and white photograph of your painting, the shades of grey would be the different values or tones within the painting. Value is the lightness or darkness a color or hue. Believe it or not, value is more important than color to the design and success of a painting.
For example, pink is a tint of red. A dark color is called a shade. Forest green is a shade of green.
A shade is where an artist adds black to a colour to darken it down. A tone is where an artist adds grey to a colour.
Brown is a color. It can be considered a composite color, but it is mainly a darker shade of orange. In the CMYK color model used in printing and painting, brown is usually made by combining the colors orange and black.
A hue is essentially the three primary colours (red, blue, and yellow) as well as the three secondary colours (orange, green, and purple). These colours are pure, meaning that white or black have not been mixed in with them. Black, white, and grey are considered neutral colours.
Hue: A pure pigment. Tone: A pure pigment with just grey added. Tint: A pure pigment with just white added. Shade: a pure pigment with just black added.
The tonal value of a hue is said to be adjusted, or toned down when you reduce its vibrance without altering the hue. Black, grey or white is added to a hue to adjust its tonal value. A shade is created when we add black to a colour and a tint is created when we add white.
Shades are dark values that are made by mixing a color with black. Maroon is a shade of red, and navy is a shade of blue.
