However, the good news is that the photos usually arent taken all at once, and the time is broken up throughout your day. Most photographers say you need about 30 minutes for wedding party portraits, 30 minutes for family portraits (close family only), and 45 minutes for couple portraits.
Although its totally possible to create beautiful photos at any time of day, its always worth planning portraits for golden hour. Golden hour provides the most dynamic lighting for landscapes while also providing the most flattering lighting for portraiture. Who wouldnt want that combo for their own photos!?
This short window of pretty light occurs about one hour before the sunset (depending on the venue). Whether you are planning on doing a First Look, or all your photos after the ceremony, this is a time that you dont want to miss on your wedding day.
Golden hour is the last hour before sunset when the light changes into warm yellow tones. The sunlight is soft and glowing during this time, creating a dreamy, romantic look in photographs. And because its diffused and not harsh like midday light, the camera can read it easier.
The golden hour is known for producing beautiful natural light that is easy to work with. Its hard to overexpose or underexpose parts of an image, like a subjects face, because the light is very even and has a beautiful golden hue, says photographer Jenn Byrne.
I would suggest that you introduce yourself to the photographer, tell him you are interested in learning/watching him work and then take your cues from there. If it were me, Id be more than happy to let you in on some stuff and get some shots for yourself.
Golden hour is when the sun is low on the horizon, typically an hour before sunset or after sunrise. The light is warm, soft, and flattering during this time, making it the perfect time for wedding photography.
One of the biggest things many dont think about with sunset photography is that sometimes the magic doesnt even happen until maybe 15 to 20 minutes after the sun actually sets. Its best to scope out a location about 45 minutes before sunset, get all of your equipment set up, and then relax and wait.
