Shadow Photography Ideas, Tips, and Examples Take Advantage of the Inverse Square Law. Create Silhouettes Add Patterns. Frame Your Subject. Use Hard Light. Experiment with Light Patterns for Portraits. Make It Black and White. Minimize Distractions.
Lets list some reasons you probably dont want to shoot portraits in the sun: The light will be bright, contrasty, and the shadows will be hard and distinct. Your subject will probably squint. On a hot day, your subject will get hot, and cranky and both you and the subject wont have much fun.
Why do photographers prefer cloudy days for portraits? Soft light is always better for portraits and the such. If the sun is out, you have hard light with defined shadows. Behind the clouds, you have soft light with no defined shadows.
Position the subject with her back against the sun. Ensure light doesnt directly shine on your lens. Fill in the shadows with a light source. Meter off of her face. During post-processing, burn the background.
Place your subject close to the edge of the shadow. Placing it on the edge of the shadow means that the bright light outside of the shadow area will be more likely to illuminate it without shining directly onto it. This helps to add dimension.
Professional photographers swear by the perfect light of the golden hour, which lasts for about an hour right after sunrise and an hour right before sunset when the sun is low in the sky and offers a soft, diffused light.
Typically, positioning yourself so the sun is behind you works best for landscape or action shots but if used with portraits, be aware of the above factors. More commonly known as back lighting, the technique of keeping the sun behind your subject can give equally successful results.
The last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise are coveted by professional photographers. Referred to as the golden hour or magic hour, these times provide the perfect light to capture stunning photos. Learning to harness the power of the golden hour is a tool every photographer can use.
