Both ANSI and AWS are more cautious, recommending a shade number 11 for welding at 60-160 amps, a number 12 for 160-250 amps, and a number 14 for 250-500 amps. Verify that both the welding helmet and lens shade meet ANSI Z87. 1 certification.
As mentioned before, the safest shade for welding can be determined by the type of welding you're performing. For example, a shade range of 10 to 13 is advisable for MIG welding. On the other hand, DIN levels of 8 or higher are recommendable for TIG welding, depending on the arc length.
Typical weld shade ranges are between shade #8 to #13. When the helmet is in the down position, you will see through a light lens allowing for clear visibility and evaluation of the weld piece and the surrounding area. Once the weld arc is struck, the helmet will automatically darken to the shade you have selected.
Generally speaking, the higher shade numbers ranging from 8 to 13 are designated for welding tasks, while the lower shades that allow more light to pass through are intended for other projects. Grinding is typically associated with DIN 3, while cutting can require a shade number of 5 to 8.
At the very minimum, when welding using less amperage and thinner steel materials, use a lens with shade 10. On average, welding ¼-inch of mild steel in a single pass needs roughly 180 amps. Welding Flux Core using MIG with different amperages requires the lens shade as shown below.
Can You Weld With Shade 5 Glasses? Welding with shade 5 is usually sufficient for light work. If your activities involve arcs such as MIG welding, shade number 5 is unsuitable. The shade is not dark enough to protect your eyes from the IR of the arc.
Welding shade numbers represent how dark the lens filter gets when an arc is struck. Industry standard welding shades range from 5-13, with a 'light' shade (what you see through the lens before the arc is struck) at a 3 or 4. The shade number should directly correlate to the welding application.

A DIN shade 3 level allows around 14% of visible light through the lens, while DIN 4 is three times darker, allowing only 5% light transmission.
