Just like freestanding gazebos, playhouses, storage sheds, and detached carports, pergolas are generally considered an accessory structure– not permanent. An accessory structure, for residential purposes, is non-habitable. In other words, it is not used for permanent dwellings or sleeping quarters.
Simply put, for many large flat spaces, a pergola is the ideal finishing touch. Huge Size Variety — One of the reasons behind the popularity of pergolas is that almost any space can accommodate one. That's because you'll find a wide range of pergola sizes sure to fit your design.
Both are structures designed to provide shading in outdoor areas. The main difference is that pergodas feature a solid roof made up of slats, whereas pergolas feature a sliding or louvred roof for greater versatility. Pagodas are Asian in origin and feature a striking tiered tower design with multiple eaves.
Shade structures and patio covers are favorite garden and landscape design features to enjoy beautiful days outdoors to the fullest. There are many creative ways to build a shade structure using low cost materials such as wood, fabric, branches and even twigs! An outdoor umbrella is the most simple patio shade cover.
While many gazebos are octagonal or oval, most pavilions are designed to be long and rectangular. Additionally, while a gazebo is more of a self-contained structure, pavilions are commonly used to provide a roof for a patio or seating area below. Pavilions have completely open sides and no-built in floor like a gazebo.
As we previously mentioned, most pergolas are designed with an open-roof design that allows for sufficient sunlight and air circulation. Open-top pergolas are most often placed in the garden to create an appealing focal point and can add even more beauty to the space with the help of trailing vines.
A pergola extends your living space and increases the amount of time you can spend outside. Designed and oriented correctly on your lot, a pergola can cast enough light shade to make even a warm afternoon enjoyable or if you still need additional protection, you can a retractable shade cover for more shade.
The main difference between a pergola and a gazebo is the function of the roof. A gazebo and a pavilion provide full coverage from the sun, while a pergola allows for sunlight to shine through its slatted roof. Typically, a pergola provides partial shelter and shade over a garden, pathway, or patio.
To start, both structures rise up and create height in your landscape. But a pergola has an open roof with layered beams, while a pavilion is a small room with a roof and no walls. While both structures provide shade, a pavilion has the added benefit of protecting you from rain.
The cons of owning a pergola: Pergolas require some maintenance. ... Your pergola might look different over time. ... Beware of termites. ... Not everyone is a fan. ... They probably won't increase your property value.
