Check if any of the shapes have been placed in the background. Double-click the top or bottom of a page to show the Headers/Footers space and see if that highlights the greyed out options.
To insert a shape: Select the Insert tab, then click the Shapes command. A drop-down menu of shapes will appear. Select the desired shape. Click and drag in the desired location to add the shape to your document.
It will be greyed out if you are using the old 1997-2004 doc binary format for your document. Switch to using the docx format and you can insert shapes.
