How to calculate Body Mass Index. Body Mass Index is a simple calculation using a persons height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a persons weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared. A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9.
Calculate Your BMI Body Mass Index (BMI) is a persons weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. A high BMI can indicate high body fatness. BMI screens for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual.
Heres some advice for losing weight if your BMI is high: Reduce your daily calorie intake. Taking control of your calorie intake is a solid first step to losing weight and reducing your BMI. Avoid crash diets. Move more. Eat more fibre.
Adults with a BMI over 25 are considered overweight and a BMI over 30 is considered obese. On the other hand, older adults do better if they have a BMI between 25 and 27. Research shows that adults over 65 who are underweight experience more health issues and shorter life expectancy.
BMI ranges If your BMI is: below 18.5 youre in the underweight range. between 18.5 and 24.9 youre in the healthy weight range. between 25 and 29.9 youre in the overweight range.
BMI does not account for ethnic variations in body size and fat percentage. Recall that it was developed by a Belgian, using presumably white subjects of European heritage. This population may tend toward proportions of fat to muscle and bone that differ docHubly from other populations.
The formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. If height has been measured in centimeters, divide by 100 to convert this to meters. When using English measurements, pounds should be divided by inches squared. This should then be multiplied by 703 to convert from lbs/inches2 to kg/m2.
Under 18.5 - you are very underweight and possibly malnourished. 18.5 to 24.9 - you have a healthy weight range for young and middle-aged adults. 25.0 to 29.9 - you are overweight. Over 30 - you are obese.
