The ls Command in Linux The ls command, as discussed above, can be used to list files and directories within a directory in Linux.
dir -1 file. txt command gives you a single column with the names of all the files and folders in that directory straight away. This can save file names of the directory in the file.
To copy a file to the same directory on Linux, use cp with the name of the source file and the name of the copy. The cp command can also be used to copy the file to a different directory, to copy multiple files, or to recursively copy entire directories.
Click Copy File List to Clipboard on the classic menu. Youll still need to paste the copied list into a text file. Launch Run, type Notepad in the Open box, and click OK. Then press the Ctrl + V hotkey to paste the folders file list into Notepad.

Re: Print Directory list to a file. Alternatively, open the directory in Nemo, press Ctl+A to select all, Ctl+C to copy, then open Text Editor, in a blank text file press Ctl+V to paste - et voila! Save the text file and there you have a full list of all files in that directory.
To save (or write to) a file that youve made edits to, use the :w command. To quit Vi, use the :q command. To save and quit all at once, combine both commands into :wq. *NOTE: You can add an exclamation point ! to any command to force it.
You use the cp command for copying files from one location to another. This command can also copy directories (folders). [file/directory-sources] specifies the sources of the files or directories you want to copy. And the [destination] argument specifies the location you want to copy the file to.
