Cargo should have at least one tie-down for each 10 feet of cargo.
When an article of cargo is not blocked or positioned to prevent movement in the forward direction, and the item is longer than 10 ft in length, then it must be secured by two tiedowns for the first 10 ft of length, and one additional tiedown for every 10 ft of length, or fraction thereof, beyond the first 10 ft.
For articles longer than 10 feet, an additional tie-down is required for every 10-foot increment or part thereof. Articles weighing 10,000 pounds or more require tie-downs at all four corners. Wheeled or tracked vehicles over 10,000 pounds require four direct (anchor) tie-downs and tightening devices.
For loads up to 5,000 pounds, you need a minimum of two tie down straps. For loads over 5,000 pounds, you need additional tie down straps. A good rule of thumb is one strap for every 10 feet of cargo length. We recommend that if you are transporting 10,000 pounds or more, then to use at least four tiedowns.
Articles longer than 5 feet but shorter than 10 pounds require two tie-downs, regardless of weight. For articles longer than 10 feet, an additional tie-down is required for every 10-foot increment or part thereof. Articles weighing 10,000 pounds or more require tie-downs at all four corners.
If your cargo item is 5 feet or less in length but over 1,100 pounds in weight it will require at least two tie-downs. If your load is longer than 10 feet, you will need two tie-downs for the first 10 feet and one tie-down for every additional 10 feet of the cargo.
