Last names can be derived from occupations (e.g., Smith), locations (e.g., Hill), personal characteristics (e.g., Young), or paternal lineage (e.g., Johnson). In some cultures, surnames were assigned based on the fathers name (e.g., OConnor, meaning son of Connor).

English surnames began as a way of identifying a certain aspect of that individual, such as by trade, fathers name, location of birth, or physical features, and were not necessarily inherited. By 1400 most English families, and those from Lowland Scotland, had adopted the use of hereditary surnames.
Surnames may have originated from personal characteristics, locations, events, or from family associations. The use of surnames was not common in Europe before the Middle Ages.
Because names at that time were often specific to an area, a name could be almost completely eliminated. There are less drastic reasons for a surnames disappearance as well. Sometimes, a name is changed over time, or a male line may simply die out.
