Brushing or spraying alone wont do it. The secret is applying thin coats of film finish and then polishing them either by hand or machine. Sean Clarke takes you through the steps: sealing the wood, filling the grain, building the finish, leveling the topcoat, and rubbing out to a high sheen.
The process is called rubbing out, and serves the purpose of getting rid of minor imperfections in a surface film finish, such as varnish or lacquer, (sometimes) leveling the finished surface, and establishing a consistent sheen.
It is typically achieved by using a high-gloss varnish or lacquer. This type of finish is often used on wood furniture, floors, and cabinets. It can also be used on other surfaces such as metal, plastic, and glass.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
Achieving a glass-like smoothness on wood involves meticulous sanding, starting with coarse grit sandpaper and progressing to finer grits. Use a sanding block or machine for even pressure, and finish with polishing compounds or a rubbing compound for a smooth, reflective surface.
I start with 800-grit, wet-dry sandpaper from a paint or auto parts store (photo above). Wrap the sandpaper around a flat cork block and use a lubricant to speed the process (mineral spirits for a lacquer finish, water for varnish). The lubricant creates a slurry and floats the dust away.
