A pelvic examination under general anaesthetic is a safe procedure. Your nurse will tell you who to contact if you have any problems after your test. Your doctor makes sure the benefits of this examination outweigh any possible risks.
The short answer to this question is, yes, you can be sedated to get a pelvic exam and Pap smear.
For many sexual trauma survivors, pelvic exams can feel intrusive and be triggering or re-traumatizing. ing to one study, the pelvic exam is one of the most common anxiety-inducing medical procedures.
After age 65, you can stop having cervical cancer screenings if you have never had abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer, and youve had two or three negative screening tests in a row, depending on the type of test.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that all women between the ages of 21 and 65 should get regular Pap smears tests. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) do not recommend Pap smears for people under the age of 21.
The USPSTF recommends screening for cervical cancer in women age 21 to 65 years with cytology (Pap smear) every 3 years or, for women ages 30 to 65 years who want to lengthen the screening interval, screening with a combination of cytology and HPV testing every 5 years (A recommendation).
Because the procedure touches the cervix, it can trigger vasovagal response - the stimulation of the vagus nerve which can make you lightheaded, sweaty, and dizzy. This can lower your blood pressure making you feel faint. Other side effects of smears are temporary bleeding (spotting) and cramping.
Youll usually have this treatment under local anaesthesia so youll be awake but wont feel any pain. General anaesthesia (where you are asleep) may also be an option under some circumstances ask your nurse or doctor for advice.
