The actual percentage will vary depending on your source, but theres an old writers saw that goes, Ninety percent of writing is rewriting. Weve always believed this. Its a rare writer who can sit down and bash out a draft that doesnt need an immense amount of attention and love.
I proofread the previous chapter everytime i sit down to write so id say its at least half of my process. I never sit down and hammer that keyboard before i take that trip first. If re-writing is considered writing I would put it at 70% editing. Its a lot of editing, and then what you just edited needs to be edited.
In A Moveable Feast, Ernest Hemingway told us that, The only kind of writing is rewriting. And from there, at least, came generations of similar advice from almost everyone who has ever written about writingincluding me, at least sometimes.
How do writers revise? Add information, quotes, words, or punctuation that you think will help make your piece clearer or more descriptive for your reader. Subtract information, quotes, or words that you think dont really add anything to your writing, or might confuse your reader.
First draft. Theres a great phrase, all writing is rewriting, which means that a final piece is actually rewritten in parts (sometimes over and over again) until its the best it can be, rather than written start to finish perfectly the first time.
Rewriting is the essence of writing well: its where the game is won or lost. That idea is hard to accept. We all have an emotional equity in our first draft; we cant believe that it wasnt born perfect.
In the rewriting, or revising, phase, you review what you have written and consider how and where your writing can be improved. Its important to remember that there is no such thing as a perfect writing process, and you can always edit and polish your thoughts later.
For many published authors I know, myself included, a completed novel takes them about 10, thats right, 10 drafts, and at least a year of real editing. Will you be spending every single second editing your novel? No, of course not.
