While rework might be necessary in some cases, especially if materials are particularly valuable and work is worth saving rather than scrapping, it is still waste in the process that should be identified and analyzed.
A rework order represents both a replenishment element and a requirement for the same material. The requirement side of the rework order is satisfied by the material to be reworked, which comes from a prior, regular replenishment element.
These wastes are over production, waiting, transportation, over processing, inventory, unnecessary motions and defects (Figure 1).
Sources of waste can be broadly classified into four types: Industrial, Commercial, Domestic, and Agricultural. Industrial Waste. These are the wastes created in factories and industries. Commercial Waste. Commercial wastes are produced in schools, colleges, shops, and offices. Domestic Waste. Agricultural Waste.
The seven wastes are Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Overproduction, Overprocessing and Defects. They are often referred to by the acronym TIMWOOD.
