In ACL reconstruction surgery, a new ACL is made from a graft of replacement tissue from one of two sources: a portion of the patients own iliotibial band, hamstring, quadriceps or patellar tendon. an allograft (tissue from a human organ donor)
Bridge-enhanced ACL repair (BEAR) is a new FDA-approved procedure that allows a torn ACL to heal itself and does not require graft tissue to be taken from another part of the body.
Patellar Tendon It attaches from the knee cap to the shin bone. It is the graft with the longest track record and is consider by many to be the gold-standard for ACL reconstruction. In most circumstances this is the graft recommended for professional athletes and in any young active individual.
Improvements in imaging studies such as MRI means that specialists can precisely locate tear locations and identify patients most likely to benefit from primary ACL repair. Other promising developments in ACL care include mechanical supplementation to provide knee joint stability during recovery.
Surgical Treatment and ACL Reconstruction There are a number of surgical options for reconstructing the ACL. The type of procedure done may vary from patient to patient depending on a specific surgeons preference as well as factors unique to an individual patient.
The BEAR procedure (bridge-enhanced ACL restoration) uses a special collagen scaffold to help the injured ACL heal. Designed initially in Boston, it has been researched extensively over the past 10+ years and was recently approved by the Food Drug Administration for patients over the age of 14.
Known as Bridge-Enhanced ACL Restoration implant, or BEAR, the technique involves the use of an implant injected with the patients own blood to form a bridge between torn ends of an ACL. The collagen implant enables the body to heal the torn ligament by protecting it from the harsh environment within the knee joint.
What Is ACL Reconstruction? A torn ACL usually is treated with a procedure called an ACL reconstruction. Surgeons replace the damaged ligament with new ACL graft tissue either taken from the patients own body (tissue from the main patellar tendon or the hamstring) or donated from someone else (called an allograft).
