Patellar Tendon It attaches from the knee cap to the shin bone. It is the graft with the longest track record and is consider by many to be the gold-standard for ACL reconstruction. In most circumstances this is the graft recommended for professional athletes and in any young active individual.
A revision ACL reconstruction is a second surgery needed to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. ACL revision surgery is a more challenging operation for the orthopedic surgeon than a primary reconstruction.
In general, there are three main graft options: a patellar tendon autograft, a hamstring autograft, and an allograft. An autograft comes from the patients own body, whereas an allograft comes from a cadaver donor. An allograft can come from patellar tendon, hamstring tendon, achilles and other ankle tendons.
Patellar tendon Utilizing a section of the patellar tendon along with a one inch section of bone taken from the patella and a one-inch section of bone taken from the tibia is an autograft that has been used for decades in ACL reconstruction and has a history of long term success.
After an ACL reconstruction, up to 14% of patients go on to suffer a graft rupture, an ACL re-rupture [8]. Several risk factors for suffering an ACL re-rupture have been identified, including younger age, high activity level, female sex, and the use of allograft [9,10,11].
Bridge-enhanced ACL repair (BEAR) is a new FDA-approved procedure that allows a torn ACL to heal itself and does not require graft tissue to be taken from another part of the body. Duke Health is one of the few centers in the U.S. to offer the BEAR procedure.
The best cardio after an ACL reconstruction surgery will be one that puts low pressure on the knee joint. Many of our doctors recommend exercises like cycling, swimming, the elliptical, or taking up an aerobics class at your gym. If you are a runner, make sure to ask for a running plan from your physical therapist.
As a result, ACL tears are often treated with surgery. The current treatment options include ACL reconstruction, a procedure called primary repair and ACL restoration with the BEAR Implant.
