Revision means just what it says: a re-vision. To revise is to see again, to rethink your original essay. It does not mean simply to fix the first draft, identifying grammar or mechanical errors or modifying sentence structure. It is a deeper process.
Revision is a process in writing of rearranging, adding, or removing paragraphs, sentences, or words. Writers may revise their writing after a draft is complete or during the composing process.
What does it mean to revise? Revision literally means to see again, to look at something from a fresh, critical perspective. It is an ongoing process of rethinking the paper: reconsidering your arguments, reviewing your evidence, refining your purpose, reorganizing your presentation, reviving stale prose.
Revising is the stage of the writing process after the first draft where you improve what you wrote with additions, removals, corrections, and rephrasing. Typically, it is the final stage before completion and the writers last chance to fix any mistakes.
Revision is often defined as the last stage in the writing process (prewriting, writing, and revision). Sommers (1982), on the other hand, sees revision as a process of making changes throughout the writing of a draft, changes that work to make the draft congruent with a writers changing intentions.
Replace words and phrases: Delete weak adverbs. Delete redundant words and phrases. Change longer verb phrases into stronger, single-word verbs. Change negative constructions into positive ones. Follow this, that, these, or those with a noun. Use specific nouns and phrases to be precise in meaning.
