Infection of the knee joint following ACL reconstruction is a rare but serious complication. Past studies have attempted to uncover the risk factors that make certain individuals more susceptible to infection than others. But many of these studies have been limited to small and medium-sized cohorts. A new study reported in the American Journal of Sports Medicine has examined the largest, single-center cohort to date. Findings reveal that graft type, age, and revision surgery could be linked to the risk of infection following ACL reconstruction. A revision ACL reconstruction is a second surgery needed to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. This is a more challenging operation for the orthopedic surgeon.
There is no real limit to the amount of times the ACL can be reconstructed. However, each successive surgery may become technically challenging due to bone loss. This requires that your surgeon have expertise in complex revision ACL surgery.
The procedure usually takes less than two hours. It will require an incision to remove a tendon if you are undergoing an autograft, in which a tendon from another part of your body is inserted in your knee.
In general, most revision ACL reconstructions take 9-12 months to adequately heal and for the athlete to recover their strength, endurance, proprioception and balance.
Dr. Blackwell supports patients of all ages, from teenage athletes to patients in their 40s, 50s, and above.
ACL reconstruction surgery has a success rate of 80-90%.
Because revision ACL reconstruction is a more difficult operation to perform compared to primary ACL surgery, patients should choose an orthopedic surgeon with ample experience and with whom they feel comfortable. The doctor should take the time to answer all of a patients questions in nontechnical terms.
