Treatment choices include: Cone biopsy. Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), which uses a thin, low-voltage electrified wire loop to cut out abnormal cervical cells. Cryotherapy, which destroys abnormal cervical cells by freezing them. Laser therapy, which uses a laser beam to destroy abnormal cervical cells.
Acceptable specimens for the Pap Test include cervical, cervical and vaginal, endocervical, vaginal and/or vulvar scrapings or brushings.
Various fixatives are used in exfoliative cytology. Out of which, 95% ethanol is the commonly used fixative. Hence, the conventional method for fixation of Pap smear is to fix the Pap smear immediately in 95% ethyl alcohol after preparing the smear.
The most commonly used fixatives for diagnostic pathology and cytologic specimens are 10% NBF and 95% ethanol [3]. In our institution, 96% alcohol used by clinicians as a fixative for cytology specimens because of its accessibility and affordability.
SPECIMEN COLLECTION FOR PAP Keep the preserved specimen at room temperature or refrigerated (2-8C). It is recommended to return the specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection.
Smears must be fixed immediately before they dry. A 95% solution of ethyl alcohol or spray fixative is used to fix the slide. The slides should be labeled in pencil with the patients name AND date of birth and a properly completed Pap smear requisition should accompany the slide.
A Pap specimen in a liquid-base (SurePath) vial may be stored at room temperature for an indefinite period of time.
Pap test. In a Pap test, your doctor uses a vaginal speculum to hold your vaginal walls apart and to see the cervix. Next, a sample of cells from your cervix is collected using a small cone-shaped brush and a tiny plastic spatula (1 and 2).
