The exhibition showcases exquisite foreign dating, dating back to the 14th century, sourced from private collections across Russia. It celebrates the centenary of religious icons being recognized as art rather than mere religious objects. Previously obscured by time and layers of paint, efforts to restore these icons revealed breathtaking beauty, which astounded artist André Matisse during his visit to Moscow. He remarked that artists should learn to paint here, not in Italy. Today, only a few of these masterpieces survive, as many were destroyed in the Soviet era. Without the intervention of museums, these cultural treasures might not exist today, with an estimated 50,000 icons still present in Russia.
