Hi, this is Gary with MacMost.com. On todays episode lets look at using Find and Replace in TextEdit and other apps. Find and Replace is a tool I use all the time and I take it for granted. But a lot of people dont know about it or dont use it. You can find it in most word processing apps. Im going to demonstrate here first in TextEdit. Ive loaded in the Project Gutenberg version of The Call of the Wild. So a very large document here and say I wanted to universally replace something throughout. Well, first Ill start with Find and then Ill look at Find and Replace and then Ill look at Find and Replace All to do it all in one shot. So to find something I would go first to Edit and then Find. Now it is going to be in a slightly different place in different apps. Sometimes there is an entire Find or Search menu all by itself. But here it is in Edit. Ive got Find and some other similar commands. Let me just start with Find here because I can get to everything through there. This w

The Find function allows you to locate a particular number or text string, while the Replace function helps you replace a particular number or text string with something else.
You can also open the basic Find and Replace pane with the keyboard shortcut CONTROL + H. When you replace text, its a good idea to select Replace instead of Replace All.
Of course, pressing Ctrl+H displays the Replace tab of the Find and Replace dialog box. If you want to get rid of the dialog box, there are three ways you can do it. I find the easiest way is to simply press Esc. You can also press Ctrl+F4, or you can use Tab to select the Cancel button and then press Enter.
Try it! Select Replace or press Ctrl + H. In the Find what box, type the text you want to search for. Select Find Next to see where the text appears in your file. In the Replace with box, type the text you want. Select Replace to change the text or select Replace All to change all instances of this text in your file.
With Replace, the computer will find one word at a time, and you have to press the Replace button every time you want to replace a particular word. But if you want to replace a particular word with another word in the entire document, you can press the Replace All button.

You use the Find and Replace dialog box when you want to find and optionally replace small amounts of data, and when you are not comfortable using a query to find or replace data.
