Candace Fisher McLane, a housing and environmental design specialist at the University of Missouri Extension, emphasizes the importance of conducting a thorough apartment inspection with the landlord present before moving in. She recommends filling out and signing a rental inspection checklist, which can be found on their website. This checklist allows renters to assess the condition of each room and document any damages. Noting these issues helps ensure that the apartment is in acceptable condition prior to moving in, and provides a reference for comparing the unit’s state upon moving out. Renters may also request repairs for damages, such as patching holes in walls, before occupancy.
