ugh so many things im not gonna be able to memorize this im gonna have to read off my computer its so confusing hey yall im dr marta perez welcome back to my channel where we discuss pregnancy birth and postpartum today were gonna talk about kind of a slightly different thing were gonna talk about parental leave policies and how confusing they are dont forget to hit subscribe so that you never miss a video [Music] the reason i wanted to make this episode is because i get so many of my patients coming to me with paperwork and questions about when can i take off work what paperwork needs to be done what are my rights during this postpartum period about spending time with my baby so we are going to cover some of that in this episode just a quick note im going to use the term parental leave and mostly what im talking about is maternity leave or leave for a woman who has given birth to a child but i really feel passionate about using the terms parental leave so that we can advocat

Dont worry if you change your mind about when to return to work. Just write to your employer with your new dates, and give them plenty of time: to end your leave sooner, tell your employer at least 8 weeks before your new end date.
You can also cancel SPL before the date given in the notice to end maternity leave or pay, or maternity allowance, as long as you give your employer (or for maternity allowance, the Department for Work and Pensions) your notice to cancel within 6 weeks of the childs birth.
You need to report changes in your circumstances that happen while youre receiving Maternity Allowance, for example if you go back to work. Your Maternity Allowance could be stopped or reduced if you do not report a change straight away. If youre paid too much you might have to pay some of the money back.
Your employer cannot refuse to let you take maternity leave or refuse to let you change the start date providing you give notice as above.
Maternity Allowance (MA) is treated as income for Universal Credit and is deducted in full. This may mean that you may not be eligible for Universal Credit during your MA period or you may still qualify for some Universal Credit, for example, to help pay for your rent.
You wont need to pay back statutory maternity pay or Maternity Allowance, even if you dont return to work.
If you claim late, you can get Maternity Allowance backdated for up to three months if you would have been entitled to it earlier. It does not matter why your claim is late.
Changing the dates of your maternity leave You can change the dates of your maternity leave as long as you give your employer enough notice: to start your leave sooner, tell your employer at least 4 weeks before your new start date.
