We talk a lot about recommendations on a Monday because theyre an incredibly important part of your application, but theyre also the part thats hardest to manage and control because your destiny is in the hands of other people. But today Im going to talk about those marginal, strange situations where you dont have great options to recommend you because of the setup of your career. Plan on timing your request so that you give your recommender enough time to write you a strong letter; two to three months in advance is ideal. If a letter writer has plenty of time to prepare a letter and is not asked at the last minute, you are more likely to get a glowing recommendation.
