Depending on the size of the volumes, it can take several minutes for the AMI-creation process to complete (sometimes up to 24 hours). You might find it more efficient to create snapshots of your volumes before creating your AMI.
Using the EC2 Console Open Amazon EC2 console, and select the region that contains the AMI you want to use. In the left-hand navigation, select AMIs under Images to display all AMIs in your selected region. For the AMI you want to copy, right click to show Actions, and then select Copy AMI.
Create an AMI from an Amazon EC2 Instance Right-click the instance you want to use as the basis for your AMI, and choose Create Image from the context menu. Create Image context menu. In the Create Image dialog box, type a unique name and description, and then choose Create Image.
To update an AMI, launch an instance and update its software. For that instance to have access to the AWS services that it needs, create an AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role with the correct permissions policies attached.
An AMI consists of the following: This includes the operating system, an application server, and applications. Launch permissions that control which AWS accounts can use the AMI to launch instances. A block device mapping that specifies the volumes to attach to the instance when its launched.
You do not need to wait for the Instance Status Check to complete before using an Amazon EC2 instance. Linux instances are frequently ready 60-90 seconds after launch.
On the Amazon EC2 console, on the Elastic Block Store menu, choose Snapshots. Search for the snapshot that you want to restore, and select it. Choose Actions, and then choose Create Volume. Create the new volume in the same Availability Zone as your EC2 instance.
It can take several hours, but it generally doesnt matter how long it takes. If you need a completely consistent snapshot you shut the server down, trigger the snapshot, then start the server immediately.
The most common cause for slow creation of AMIs or snapshots is the amount of dirty data that must be copied to Amazon S3. This dirty data is measured by the number of blocks. The following factors might result in a large number of dirty blocks: Size of the EBS volume.
You are only charged for the storage of the bits that make up your AMI, there are no charges for creating an AMI. EBS-backed AMIs are made up of snapshots of the EBS volumes that form the AMI.
