well what I intend to go through today is a topic that comes up again and again and again yeah we spend a lot of time consulting and then cross from time and it comes up again and again how does Oracle actually work what happens internally when you do DML now why is it thatamp;#39;s Oracleamp;#39;s mechanisms for crash recovery mean you canamp;#39;t corrupt the database the reason I think this topic comes up is that as a database administrator you have to have absolute confidence in the ability of Oracle to survive any disaster which it can do and as a database administrator I believe that I proved it intellectually and also practically many Etonians and Iamp;#39;ve done horrible things in databases itamp;#39;s impossible to corrupt them Oracle wonamp;#39;t let you do it now as a database administrator I know that but I have to be able to pass that knowledge on to other people in the organization to the developers to my managers to other people to motivate the use of the database

Redo records are buffered in a circular fashion in the redo log buffer of the SGA (see How Oracle Database Writes to the Redo Log) and are written to one of the redo log files by the Log Writer (LGWR) database background process.
An Oracle database must have at least two redo log files, and most databases have more than two. These files are written by the LGWR process in a circular fashion; that is, when the last log file is filled, the first log file is reused.
The most crucial structure for recovery operations is the redo log, which consists of two or more preallocated files that store all changes made to the database as they occur. Every instance of an Oracle Database has an associated redo log to protect the database in case of an instance failure.
UNDO is used to rollback transactions. REDO records changes to the original data, and is important for transactions that are not committed at the time of a crash or failure.
Creating Redo Log Members To create new redo log members for an existing group, use the SQL statement ALTER DATABASE with the ADD LOGFILE MEMBER clause. The following statement adds a new redo log member to redo log group number 2: ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE MEMBER /oracle/dbs/log2b.
Hundreds of MB is a normal size for Oracle Hyperion Financial Management databases. But the preferred way to determine the size of redo log files is to enable FASTSTARTMTTRTARGET, and run a typical database workload for a while.
Archive logs are archived redo(online) log files. In redo log files are all changes that happened to your data. If your database is in archivelog mode, than redo logs cant be overwritten, they are archived in some other location when they are full. Redo and archive logs are used in various database recovery scenarios.
To create new redo log groups and members, you must have the ALTER DATABASE system privilege. A database can have up to MAXLOGFILES groups. To create a new group of redo log files, use the SQL statement ALTER DATABASE with the ADD LOGFILE clause.
