welcome to another retro nas video uh in this video were going to look at neta talk which is an open source implementation of afp the apple filer protocol and apple talk and well see how those work on some new macs and some old macs okay as always i have ssh to my retronaz raspberry pi run the retron as tool from the things menu im going to choose net a talk 3 to start with so ill demonstrate the newer of the two systems net a talk 3 is afp apple filing protocol but only over tcp it doesnt do apple talk the old apple protocol at all so well see how that performs ive got two macs here i can test on ive got an apple imac g5 running mac os mac os x 10.5 and ive got an older imac the crt imax and thats running mac os 9.2 the pre os x max so well see how both of these perform under net a talk 3 and then well compare with the older protocol so lets net atop 3 to start with okay so back on my uh trusty g5 imac look at the model there power pc g5 uh running mac os 10 5 so again

Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) fonts, also called Font Object Content Architecture (FOCA) fonts, are the standard fonts used for Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) output. AFP fonts are made up of a code page and a character set.
AFP outline is the format by which Print Services Facility (PSF) and other AFP applications can identify Type 1 outline fonts. The Type 1 outlines are encapsulated in FOCA wrappers that allow them to be accessed as AFP resources. AFP outline uses relative metrics in the same way as 300-pel fonts.
IBM AFP printers can use FOCA raster and outline fonts, which are single-byte or double-byte, or TrueType and OpenType outline fonts.
ACIF is a tool that you can use to convert a line data, mixed data, unformatted ASCII, or XML print file into a MO:DCA-P document, retrieve resources that are used by the document, and index the file for later retrieval and viewing.
A double-byte font is used for printing languages whose base alphabets contain more than 256 graphic characters. To represent all the characters, more than 256 code points are needed. Therefore, two bytes are used: one byte to identify the section, and one byte to identify the code point in that section.
