A general consensus would be 2 inch to 4 inches from the cylinder head if practical. But its your car so its your decision. For turbo engines be sure to CLEAN ALL METAL FILINGS out of the exhaust manifold.
It should be noted that when the EGT is measured after the turbine, the turbine outlet temperature at full throttle or under a heavy load typically would be 200 to 300 F. lower than the EGT measured in the exhaust manifold.
What causes high EGTs? In simple terms, high EGTs are a result of a rich running condition in your diesel engine. This means that the engine is burning too much fuel relative to the amount of air it is getting. You may notice the effects of this as black smoke coming from your tailpipe.
Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
Many experts suggest installing the EGT probe in the exhaust manifold before the turbo for three reasons: 1) The farther the EGT probe is away from the manifold, the greater the lag time response to dynamic changes in temperature.
During normal driving, on a level road, EGTs should be in the 600 to 800-degree range. A lower cruising EGT can be a great indicator of getting good fuel economy.
All EgT probes must be mounted: In the primary header tubes. The same distance (one to two inches) from the cylinder head. Before the first bend.
EGTs are too high when they begin to pose danger to engine and turbo components. Generally, 1600 degrees Fahrenheit (871 degrees Celsius) is considered to be a good number, borderline high EGTs. It is probably safe to briefly run up to 1650F (899C) degrees.
