Files with DOTX extension are template files created by Microsoft Word to have pre-formatted settings for generation of further DOCX files. A template file is created in order to have specific user settings that should be applied to subsequent flies created from these.
docx file is a Word document, while a . dotx file is a Word template. Both can be opened and edited in Microsoft Word, but a . dotx file opens as a new document to preserve the original template.
In fact, if you save any document with the file extension . dotx, that document will become a template. Double-click on the downloaded template in File Explorer to open Word and create a new document based on the template.
Insert a document in Word Click or tap where you want to insert the content of the existing document. Go to Insert and select the arrow next to Object . Select Text from File. Locate the file that you want and then double-click it. To add in the contents of additional Word documents, repeat the above steps as needed.
DOCX files are compatible with newer versions of Microsoft Word, and can also be opened by other applications like Google Docs or LibreOffice, but may lose some features or formatting. DOCX files are also smaller, safer, and more flexible than DOC files, as they can support more elements like images, charts, or macros.
doc files are easier to access and edit. Typically, when you try to open a . dot file, Word assumes that you want to create a copy of the file, not its original. You have to remember and follow the steps to open the actual template file.
Dotx files can be opened and modified, but only via File--Open. Double clicking the file should create a document1, document2, etc, forcing a save as. So, if these are actual dotx files, instruct your users to open them via double click, and not file--open. If theyre not dotx files, save them as such.
