A proxy card will almost always have a different rosette pattern than a genuine card. It can be one thats well done, but different nonetheless. When doing this test, its important to have a reference card from the same set to go back to, since genuine cards can have different patterns over the years.
Many online and in-person events run by people entrenched within the cEDH community opt for the full-proxy friendly approach, as this stance allows for the highest number of people to be able to play in the tournament. Its no secret that cEDH decks docHub the realm of four figures in cost with little issue.
Proxy basic lands are only legal if a judge has issued them to replace a card that was damaged during play. Player-made proxies and proxies issued for any other reason are considered illegal.
Proxies are not allowed as substitutes for cards that their owner has damaged intentionally or through negligence. The card is a foil card for which no non-foil printing exists.
In sanctioned Modern MTG events, proxies are generally not allowed unless explicitly specified otherwise. Some events may offer proxies for expensive cards like the Power Nine in Vintage, but this is rare in the Modern format.
In my experience, most casual pods are cool with proxies so long as theyre legible. That said, not every player is down to play with proxies; you should always ask the pod before playing. I also know some LGS-run Commander leagues that might ban or restrict the proxies players can use to keep things balanced.
Theres a pretty wide range for how to make a proxy. Some people just write the name and abilities on a piece of paper covering a reversed card in a sleeve, some write the name of a card on the back of a bulk card like basic lands, and many people just print out the card in question.
