Hi, this is Gary with MacMost.com. On this episode lets take a look at a new feature for your Mac and iOS devices that allows you to lock and secure Notes. There is a new feature if youve got OS X 10.11.4 in the Notes app. You can now lock Notes. So what this does is actually encrypts the note using a password. Before anybody that was logged into your account could access all your notes. Just open up the Notes app and you can access them. So they were useful for keeping notes but not secure notes like putting important information and numbers and things like that into them. Now you actually lock some of your notes. You dont have to lock all of them. Ive created a new note here, just called it Test, and in order to lock it I just hit the Lock button here and select Lock This Note. What it is going to do is ask me to create a password. Let me cancel that because I can also go and say Notes, Set Password and come up with the same thing. OneNote documents are increasingly being used by threat actors to send malware to unsuspecting end users via email, ing to Proofpoint researchers. It infects victims with remote access malware that can be used to additional malware, steal passwords, or even access cryptocurrency wallets.
Right-click the name of the notebook section that you want to protect, and then choose Password Protection Add Password. In the Password Protection window, type the password you want into the Enter Password box. Type the password again into the Confirm Password box, and then press Enter.
Some important notes about passwords OneNote uses encryption to secure password-protected sections. If you forget your password, no one will be able to unlock your notes for you (not even Microsoft Technical Support). So take care when assigning passwords to your notebook sections and when changing them.
To help prevent unauthorized access to your notes, you can apply a password to specific sections of your notebook. Click the tab of the section you want the password to apply to. On the File menu, click Password Protect This Section. In the Password Protection task pane, click Set Password.
By default, notes are not end-to-end encrypted, but consumers can create secure notes that are end-to-end encrypted with a user-chosen password.
What type of encryption does Microsoft Office use for Word and Excel files? All Office files (Office 2016 and above) that you password-protect are encrypted with AES 256-bit. Office 2010 and above uses AES 128-bit. Older versions of Microsoft Office use a proprietary encryption algorithm.
OneNote uses 128-bit AES encryption to secure password-protected notebook sections. Take care when applying or changing passwords. Write down your passwords and keep them in a safe place if you think you may not be able to remember them.
How to lock and hide your notes on iPhone Start the Notes app. Tap on one of the notes to open it. Tap the Share button at the top right of the screen. In the pop-up, tap Lock Note, which has a padlock icon and should appear in the second row of icons. Enter a password (and repeat it on the Verify line). Tap Done.
