Monitor password length. The updated guidelines emphasize the importance of password length. User-generated passwords should be at least eight (8) characters, while machine-generated passwords should be at least six (6) characters.
A strong password is: At least 12 characters long but 14 or more is better. A combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Not a word that can be found in a dictionary or the name of a person, character, product, or organization. docHubly different from your previous passwords.
Passwords should be 8-12 characters long. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Vary with upper case and lower case letters (in applicable languages). Avoid recycling the same password across multiple accounts.
The NIST password recommendations now include a requirement to salt passwords with at least 32 bits of data and to ensure they are hashed with a one-way key derivation function. The NIST password recommendations are a good basis for HIPAA compliance regarding passwords.
This of course is a direct violation of the IT security policy. A users Active Directory (AD) password is unique to them and is not known by anyone else unless they share it, overtly or inadvertently. The members of the help desk who are so authorized can reset their password if they forget it.
NIST now recommends a password policy that requires all user-created passwords to be at least 8 characters in length, and all machine-generated passwords to be at least 6 characters in length. Additionally, its recommended to allow passwords to be at least 64 characters as a maximum length.
The NIST recommends resetting passwords only when necessary. Generally, organizations have a password expiration policy that allows passwords to be 60 to 90 days old at max. The NIST doesnt recommend password expiration due to the above mentioned reason.
NIST 800-53 (Moderate Baseline) A minimum of eight characters and a maximum length of at least 64 characters. The ability to use all special characters but no special requirements to use them. Restrict sequential and repetitive characters (e.g. 12345 or aaaaaa).
