Turn radio to one-watt power setting, and key the microphone. Call radio check three times, followed by your boat name and location. Wait for a reply confirming someone has heard your transmission. For general communications, always use channel 16.
The lifetime ship radio licence has no end date it will remain valid for as long as the licence details remain correct, or until the licence is either revoked by Ofcom or surrendered by the licensee. Ofcom will revoke the licence if the licence is neither amended or validated at least once every ten years.
2.2 The Ship Radio Licence authorises the installation and use of maritime radio and associated equipment, as well as non-maritime radio equipment (such as a mobile phone picocell) on a named ship, subject to applicable licence conditions. The ship must be registered in the UK or one of the Crown Dependencies.
To operate a ships VHF radio you must hold a valid operator certificate or be monitored by someone who does. The only exception is in a distress situation. All crew should know how to put out a distress call either by DSC or by voice.
The most important channels on your VHF radio are 13, 16, 19, 22, and 70. Channel 13 is used by commercial shipping to communicate their actions and confirm passage. Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) VHF-FM is designated by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) as the national distress, safety and calling frequency.
To use your VHF, turn it on and pick a channel, set the squelch to the point where you dont hear any white noise, and begin talking. Things to remember when you are on the radio: Monitor channel 16 when you are not actively in conversation with someone else.
