Footnotes are placed at the bottom of the page on which the reference appears. Endnotes are similar to footnotes but instead of being added to the bottom of each page they are grouped together at the end of the document. We use the term Notes to refer to a footnote or an endnote.
A dagger, obelisk, or obelus is a typographical mark that usually indicates a footnote if an asterisk has already been used. The symbol is also used to indicate death (of people) or extinction (of species).

Word has that traditional order for footnote symbols as one of the in-built choices: * asterix. dagger. double dagger. section sign. ‖ double vertical bar. pilcrow.
