Of the 245 pap smears reviewed, 49.8% smears were reported positive for cervical epithelial abnormalities. Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion is the commonest identified abnormality in our study at 25.7%, followed by HSIL (13.9%), with SCC the least diagnosed at 1.6%.
About 5% of all Pap tests will be abnormal, meaning that the sample contains atypical cervical cells. However, the majority of these cells are not cancerous or even precancerous. An abnormal Pap test result does not mean cancer, but it does require follow-up to rule out the possibility of cancer.
The presence of endocervical component (ECs) on cervical smears is considered essential for determining the adequacy of the Pap smear. The absence of an endocervical component in a negative smear suggests that a repeat Pap smear should be taken.
Epithelial cell abnormalities This means that the cells lining the cervix or vagina show changes that might be cancer or a pre-cancer.
High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions look somewhat to very abnormal when looked at under a microscope. They are usually caused by chronic infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) and are found when a Pap test or biopsy is done.
Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
These cell changes are usually more serious than ASC (atypical squamous cells). This means there is a greater risk that precancer or cancer is present. This result is sometimes called mild dysplasia. It indicates low-grade changes that are usually caused by an HPV infection.
Normal endometrial cells on Pap tests have been associated with variable benign and malignant diseases including endometrial polyps, endometrial hyperplasia with and without atypia, endometrial carcinoma, leiomyoma, atrophy, proliferative endometrium, and intrauterine device use.
