Pap test. During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). A self-collected sample is taken from the vagina so you dont need to worry about docHubing the cervix or getting the right spot. All you need to do is insert a swab a few centimetres into your vagina and rotate it for 20 to 30 seconds. You will be given a private space, such as a bathroom, to collect your sample.
Its usually done by a female nurse or doctor. Before starting, they should explain what will happen during the test and answer any questions you have. Your cervix is the opening of your womb from your vagina. A speculum (plastic or metal) and soft brush are used to take a sample of cells from your cervix.
Acceptable specimens for the Pap Test include cervical, cervical and vaginal, endocervical, vaginal and/or vulvar scrapings or brushings. Specimens may be submitted as conventional smears, although the preferred method is the ThinPrep Pap test.
