So, what are avoid notes? An avoid note is any note in the scale that is a half-step away from a note in the chord being played. As an example, playing an F on top of a C major chord sounds dissonant, since its a half step above E, the third of the chord.
The 3 chord trick, also known as the 1-4-5 progression, is a chord sequence that is widely used in popular music. It involves using the three primary chords in a particular key to create a catchy and memorable progression. These primary chords are usually the tonic (1), subdominant (4), and dominant (5) chords.
Never omit any note of a triad or seventh chord except the fifth and only omit the fifth when you must do so in order to follow rule 1. These principles assume that you have written with the correct ranges and that all the chords actually contain the notes you say they do.
Likewise, an omit5 or omit root just means to leave out whatever note is after omit. For example, a Cmaj7 chord has the notes C, E, G, B. If you omit the 5th, youre left with C, E, and B. The 9th, 11th, and 13th are even less important and can also be omitted.
Sometimes, one of the notes from the basic triad is omitted altogether. Power or 5 chords omit the 3rd, blurring the lines between major and minor. In extended chords (7th, 9th, 11th and 13th) the 5th is usually omitted partly to keep these chords from sounding too harmonically dense.
Well, its possible to omit the less important notes (root 5th) from a chord and only play the guide tones (3rd 7th) and still retain the original feel of the chords. So for example, you could play a: CMaj7 as just E B. C7 as just E B♭ (a tritone interval)
