By week 12, the goal is to have regained 80% of your full quadriceps strength. And that 80% is no arbitrary number this cutoff is the capacity at which your quadriceps are capable of controlling knee stability and providing adequate shock absorption.
This is a very, very new protocol that Merv and Tom Cross are currently researching. The protocol involves bracing the knee at 90 degrees (the point where the ACL is at its lowest tension) for 2-4 weeks to let the ACL HEAL. Thats right, the ACL can heal.
The Cross bracing protocol involves bracing the knee at an angle which allows for healing of the injured cruciate ligament.
With our advanced surgical technique and high flexion implants, the majority of our patients can sit cross-legged on the floor within 3-6 months of knee replacement surgery.
As we start to move more posterior we look for bone bruising and we start to see a stump of a torn ACL. Instead of seeing normal contour of the dark ACL substance, we start to see more a balled-up appearance. In this view we can also see the injury to the posterior horn of the medial meniscus.
ACL Reconstruction Protocol: Patients with concomitant meniscal reconstruction, weight bearing at angles greater than 45⁰ of knee flexion should be avoided for 4 weeks with no restriction in weight bearing in full extension. For weeks 4-8, weight bearing should be limited to 90 degrees of knee flexion.
What are the symptoms of an ACL injury or tear? A pop in the knee at the time of injury. Swelling of the knee. Inability to bear weight on leg (though some have little or no pain) Instability of the knee.
An ACL knee brace is a high level support brace used following ACL tears and ruptures. They may be used instead of surgery, whilst awaiting surgery, or once recovering from surgery. ACL braces are a great way to provide extra stability to the knee, give it time to heal and prevent further injury.
