When printed materials were first released, typesetters were responsible for cutting blocks of type out of wood or metal and arranging them onto plates to create printed broadsheets or books. Very few artisan booksellers today still work in this manner; most modern typesetters create type using digital technology.
Major newspaper publishers retired Linotype and similar hot metal typesetting machines during the 1970s and 1980s, replacing them with phototypesetting equipment and later computerized typesetting and page composition systems.
Manual typesetting was replaced by mechanical typesetting in the 19th century, where one of the earliest machines was designed by Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1884 and called the Linotype machine.
Typesetting is the making of block-printed writing which is formed by using types grouped from sorts. Movable type on a composing stick on a type drawer. A specimen sheet issued by William Caslon, letter founder, from the 1728 edition of Cyclopaedia.
The machine typesetting era began in 1886 and ended in 1976, and it is barely in practice (90 years). The phototypesetting era began in 1950 and ended around 1990, and it is totally gone (40 years). The laser imagesetting era began in 1978 and ended in 2008, replaced by direct-to-plate, on- and off-press (30 years).
