As pointed out previously, the purpose of using a mix of positively and negatively worded items in surveys is to help decrease potential response set bias such as acquiescence bias. However, research suggests that there are other strategies you can use to reduce respondents careless responses.
Negatively worded questions are usually included in surveys to avoid fatigue throughout the questionnaire, acquiescence 15,26,27 and to prevent respondents from choosing the same answer 28 .
Like double-barreled questions, negatively worded ones can reduce construct validity because they might capture peoples ability or motivation to figure out the question rather than their true opinions.
Negative questions or items are those items in a scale that differ in direction from most other items in that scale. Negative-wording questions, or negatively keying an item, is typically accomplished by negating an item thought to measure a construct of interest.
The evidence presented here challenges the widely adopted practice of using negatively worded statements in structured survey questionnaires to reduce respondents carelessness and resulting response set bias.
Negatively-keyed items can be (grammatically) negatively worded (e.g., I am not healthy) or (grammatically) Page 15 4 positively worded (e.g., I am ill); in the latter example, the adjective ill might be considered a polar opposite of healthy.
A combination of both positively and negatively worded items is often employed in a survey to reduce participants acquiescence bias, but such a combination may hurt the validity of the survey.
Disadvantages: Questionnaires can constrain or distort the way respondents answer they may therefore lack validity. Respondents can be influenced to answer in certain ways by the researcher or the questions. If the questionnaire is a postal questionnaire, there can be a high level of people who decline to answer.
