Errors in questionnaire surveys are usually of one of two sources: non-responses or incorrect answers. The aim was to investigate the validity of a questionnaire survey and to estimate the respective bias of these answers.
The challenge of planning, designing and implementing a questionnaire study is often underestimated. There are four potential areas of survey error; these are coverage, sampling, measurement and response.
An example of a poorly worded survey question is Do you always watch TV? With only a yes or no option, youre likely to receive no from every participant. A better way to ask this question is to remove always and give a selection of answers.
A survey has face validity if, in the view of the respondents, the questions measure what they are intended to measure. A survey has content validity if, in the view of experts (for example, health professionals for patient surveys), the survey contains questions which cover all aspects of the construct being measured.
A negative question is a type of question for which a no response indicates an affirmative answer and a yes response indicates a negative answer. It is best to avoid the use of negatives in your survey because negative questions are tricky and can easily put off respondents.
Face validity refers to the degree to which the respondents or laypersons judge the questionnaire items to be valid. Such judgment is based less on the technical components of the questionnaire items, but rather on whether the items appear to be measuring a construct that is meaningful to the respondents.
The validity of data produced by questionnaires can be undermined by the use of closed questions which limit respondents answers. In a questionnaire (or structured interview) it is possible to ask open questions or closed questions.
Prevent bias in surveys Avoid framing survey questions that influence respondents to answer a certain way. Be clear and concise. Keep your language simple to avoid misinterpretation. Provide straightforward answers for better assessment results.
