A Pap test can be normal (or negative), unclear, abnormal, or unsatisfactory. In contrast, an HPV test can be negative or positive. Even if a Pap test is negative, you still need a Pap exam every three years, as its possible for the cells in your cervix to change.
If you have a negative result for the most common types of HPV that cause cervical cancer, your risk of cervical cancer is very low and there is no need to check for abnormal cells even if you have had these in the past. If you have a positive result for HPV we will check the sample for abnormal cells.
If your result is HPV negative, your sample will not be tested for cell changes. Your test results could include one of the following: No HPV found - means you dont have high risk HPV. So you will be invited back for cervical screening in 3 or 5 years time depending on your age and where you live.
Diagnostic accuracy of Pap smear cytology showed sensitivity of 98.2% (215/219), specificity of 4.9% (2/41), positive predictive value of 84.6% (215/254), negative predictive value of 33.3% (2/6), false positive rate of 95.1% (39/41), and false-negative rate of 1.8% (4/219).
If you test positive for HPV 16/18, you will need to have a colposcopy. If you test positive for HPV, but did not have genotyping performed or had genotyping but tested negative for 16/18, you will probably need to have a colposcopy.
Listen to pronunciation. (NEH-guh-tiv reh-ZULT) A Pap test finding that means no cancer cells or other abnormal cells have been found on the surface of or in the tissue that lines the cervix.
Normal Pap test results: No abnormal cervical cells were found. A normal test result may also be called a negative test result or negative for intraepithelial lesion (area of abnormal growth) or malignancy.
Pap Results Are Often Inaccurate Sometimes these false positive Paps can be explained by a recent vaginal infection, or trauma to the cervix due to douching, tampons, or intercourse; sometimes the false positives just represent an inherent limitation of the test.
